Student Castle - Student Accommodation, Durham

Claypath is one of Durham’s oldest streets feeding the central ‘peninsula’ and this steeply-sloping site reflects the dramatic topography associated with the River Wear.

This ingenious redevelopment reconciles heritage and topographical constraints to make the most of a collection of previously developed but under-used sites for exceptional open-market student accommodation. The scheme creates 445 student bedrooms and includes extensive communal, management and ancillary facilities along with a new retail unit serving the community on Claypath.

This new intervention carefully articulates the street frontage in response to the profile of the street and the character of adjacent streetscapes to reinvigorate the commercial potential of Claypath.
