James Street: Purpose-Built Student Accommodation in the Heart of York
This landmark project on James Street represents a significant contribution to alleviating York's chronic shortage of high-quality student accommodation. Commissioned by leading developer S Harrison Developments, CSP Architects have skillfully transformed a redundant brownfield site, formerly an accident repair centre, into a premier destination for modern student living, now operated by Prestige Student Living.
Our design delivers 303 much-needed student beds, strategically located to serve both the University of York and York St John University. The development offers a diverse mix of 195 cluster-style apartments, perfect for fostering community, and 108 self-contained studios for more independent living. The scheme is a direct response to the city's need for purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA), replacing an unattractive commercial unit with a vibrant residential building that enhances the local streetscape.
The architectural vision was to create a dynamic and responsive building that improved the local townscape and the setting of the adjacent conservation area. The 3-5 storey, ‘A’-shaped structure is carefully crafted to respect and mediate between four distinct adjacent urban zones. This thoughtful approach ensures the building integrates seamlessly into its surroundings while establishing a confident new identity.
Beyond its striking exterior, the focus is on creating an exceptional living experience. Residents benefit from a wealth of amenities designed to support their academic and social lives, including a cinema, gym, games room, and dedicated study areas. The design extends into the public realm, with the creation of an external landscaped courtyard and a new ‘pocket park’ that provides valuable green space for both residents and the local community. Furthermore, the scheme enhances local infrastructure by incorporating a new shared pedestrian and cycle path, promoting sustainable travel and improving connectivity. This development is a prime example of successful urban regeneration, delivering a high-quality living environment that positively shapes its community.
