Poppleton Gate House - Affordable Housing, York

Studio flats in the former cottage hospital, which stood in an area of scheduled open space, had become difficult to let and the building maintenance costs were a burden on the Housing Association. In an attempt to overcome these problems, Design and Build contractors in partnership with the Association had tried and failed to secure planning permission to redevelop the site.

The Association asked CSP to take a fresh look at the problem with the result that a planning permission was speedily secured for a new development of houses and flats that replaced the former hospital buildings at an increased site density.

The 'L' shaped block is designed to address the two principal areas of open space and at the same time screen the rear gardens and car parking from the public domain.

The project is designed to meet The Housing Corporation's Scheme Development Standards and comply with the requirements of Secured by Design. The dwellings achieve Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes utilising various technologies to ensure low bills for residents and a low carbon foorptint.
